Nieuwsanker Howard Beale kampt met dalende kijkcijfers. Van zodra hij aankondigt om tijdens zijn show zelfmoord te plegen, kent zijn populariteit al snel geen grenzen meer. Ironisch genoeg gooit het televisienetwerk, waar Howard de buik zo van vol heeft, alle moraal overboord en gaat het volledig mee in zijn verhaal. Des te meer gedesillusioneerd door deze beslissing, maakt Howard zich op voor de tirade van de eeuw.
News anchor Howard Beale is struggling with declining ratings. As soon as he announces he will commit suicide during his show, his popularity soon knows no bounds. Ironically, the television network, which Howard is so fed up with, throws out all morals and goes along with his story completely. Maar toch is Network veel subtieler dan dat, en heeft het meer dan één filosofische troef achter de hand. Een verontrustende film die vandaag de dag niets aan relevantie heeft ingeboet, integendeel. Legendarisch is onder meer Howards pleidooi voor menselijke waardigheid, een schuimbekkende tirade die uitmondt in een waar motto voor iedereen die het in tijden van crisissen niet meer ziet zitten: "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"
