1944, a mountain village high in the Italian Alps. Even though the battlefield is far away, the war casts its shadow over life in the village. When the deserted soldier Pietro arrives, the whole dynamic of the once peaceful place changes. The oldest child of the village's teacher, Lucia, is very attracted to this mysterious stranger. As the seasons progress and the end of the war slowly dawns for Italy, Lucia's family faces its own tragedy.
Commentary
A film about Italy and its place in World War II, but very intimately viewed from the microcosm of a small Italian village high and remote in the Alps. In this way, director Maura Delpero (Maternal) succeeds brilliantly in telling a very small-scale and personal story, yet touching on larger themes and issues. Supported by beautiful cinematography of the Italian landscapes, she guides the viewer through different seasons and crucial turning points in the lives of her characters. Vermiglio is Italy's official entry for the Best International Film category for the 97th edition of the Oscars.
