De film volgt een periode in het leven van Aron Barshak, een man die beroemd en berucht werd als de Comedy Terrorist: verkleed als Osama Bin Laden crashte hij, onaangekondigd, parties en bijeenkomsten allerhande en kaapte hij shows van collega stand-up comedians. Barshaks acts bleven een wat marginaal, underground fenomeen, tot hij op een dag de stunt-van-de-eeuw doet: hij crasht -alweer verkleed als Osama- een feestje van Prins Wiliam op WIndsor Castle en kust de prins op de wang. Het bezorgt Barshak voorpagina’s in alle Britse kranten én eeuwige roem. Van de ene dag wordt hij gebombardeerd tot hét nieuwe Britse comedy talent. Maar bij zijn eerste echte show als stand-up comedian op het wereldberoemde Edinburgh Fringe Festival loopt het helemaal fout...

Wat Rebel Without Applause interessant maakt is dat de film -aan de hand van het hallucinante verhaal van Barshak- een reeks pertinente vragen stelt over humor: wat is grappig en wat niet ? Wat is humor eigenlijk? Mag je met alles lachen? Hoe ver kan je gaan? Het biedt ook een ontnuchterende kijk op het vak: een stand-up comedian wordt je niet zomaar. Het is werken, zwoegen en stressen.
