'Japan’s Book Donation to the University of Louvain’ te zien in de universiteitsbibliotheek van Leuven. De uitgelezen kans voor ZED om opnieuw de handen in elkaar te slaan met Japanse studies van KU Leuven: voor de vierde keer is er een benshi vertelling in Cinema ZED, mét live muziek. Je ontdekt ongeziene archiefbeelden, maar ook recente films van onder andere Oscarwinnaar Ryûsuke Hamaguchi. Een bijzondere inkijk van verleden tot vandaag in een fantastisch filmland.

Benshi vertellingen: 

In de jaren ’20 waren de echte sterren van de Japanse film niet zozeer de acteurs op het witte doek, maar wel de ‘benshi’: de doorwinterde stemacteurs die live voor het scherm het verhaal vertelden én de dialogen vertolkten van de stille film. Dit uniek stukje filmgeschiedenis wordt terug tot leven gebracht, dankzij de gerenommeerde benshi Ichirō Kataoka die zich deze keer laat vergezellen door twee muzikanten.

Deze maand op het programma: 

• Tōkyō kōshinkyoku (Tokyo March) 
  1929, Mizoguchi Kenji, fragment: 30 min.
  Een fragment van een klassiek liefdesverhaal dat de klassentegenstelling overstijgt te midden van de bruisende modernisering van Tokio.
• Jūjiro (Crossways) 
  1928, Kinogusa Teinosuke, 74 min.
  Uit obsessie voor een courtisane valt een jongeman een rivaal aan en wordt blind. Een valse dokter benadert zijn zus die er alles voor over heeft om haar broer zijn zicht terug te geven. 

De vertoning wordt ingeleid door Prof. Dr. Jan Schmidt (KU Leuven).

A Glimpse into 1920's Japan

Daarnaast krijg je op vrijdag 16/12 een unieke inkijk in het Japan van de jaren '20 door een eenmalige vertoning van twee documentaires, die voor het eerst in 100 jaar nog eens op het grote scherm vertoond worden in Europa. 

De vertoning wordt ingeleid door Prof. Dr. Jan Schmidt (KU Leuven).

Verder kan je genieten van de prachtige klassieker Tokyo Story en Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy van Oscarwinnaar Ryûsuke Hamaguchi.

Currently, the expo 'Japan's Book Donation to the University of Louvain' is on display at the University Library of Leuven. The perfect opportunity for ZED to once again join forces with Japanese studies at KU Leuven: for the fourth time there will be a benshi narration in Cinema ZED, with live music. You will discover unseen archive footage, but also recent films by Oscar winner Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, among others. A special insight from past to present into a fantastic film country.

Benshi performance

In the 1920s, the real stars of Japanese cinema were not so much the actors on the big screen, but rather the 'benshi': the seasoned voice actors who told the story live in front of the screen as well as interpreting the dialogues of the silent film. This unique piece of film history is brought back to life, thanks to the renowned benshi Ichirō Kataoka, who is accompanied this time by two musicians.

This month's programme:

  1929, Mizoguchi Kenji, excerpt: 30 min.
  An excerpt of a classic love story that transcends class divisions amid Tokyo's bustling modernisation.
• Jūjiro (Crossways) 
  1928, Kinogusa Teinosuke, 74 min.
  Out of obsession with a courtesan, a young man attacks a rival and goes blind. A fake doctor approaches his sister who will do anything to give her brother back his sight. 

The screening will be introduced by Prof Dr Jan Schmidt (KU Leuven).

A Glimpse into 1920's Japan

On Friday the 16th of December you can enjoy a unique one-time screening of two Japanese documentary films from the 1920's. It'll be the first time in over a hundred years these films will be shown on the big screen in Europe. 

The screening will be introduced by Prof Dr Jan Schmidt (KU Leuven).

As part of the Japan Special, you can also enjoy the classic Tokyo Story and Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy by Oscar winner Ryûsuke Hamaguchi.
