De moeder van twaalfjarige Mahito komt tijdens de oorlog om bij een brand. Zijn vader hertrouwt en het nieuwe gezin verhuist naar het platteland. Mahito kan maar moeilijk wennen aan de nieuwe situatie. En dan is er ook nog een mysterieuze reiger die hem maar blijft lastigvallen... Op een dag leidt de reiger hem naar een verlaten toren vlakbij het huis. Daar treedt Mahito een magische wereld binnen, een wereld die gedeeld wordt door de levenden en de doden.

The Boy and the Heron is a semi-autobiographical fantasy conceived by animation master Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, The Wind Rises, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo). This twelfth, and perhaps last, feature film by the Oscar-winning director is a wonderful addition to his oeuvre. The film explores life and death and is a moving tribute to friendship.
