Cinema ZED International: Armand

On one of the last days before school vacation, Elisabeth, an overprotective mom, is rushed to her little son's school. Six-year-old Armand is said to have exhibited transgressive behavior toward a classmate. All four parents need to talk to each other, but this does not go smoothly. Even the school administration is at a loss for words. The situation causes a chain reaction of accusations and finger-pointing. Was the incident between the two children just a children's game, or does it harbor something much more serious and troubling?
Commentary
What if, as a parent, you are suddenly called to your son's school because he has overstepped the boundaries of a classmate? From this complex questioning starts this Norwegian moral drama by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, grandson of Ingmar Bergman. What follows is a two-hour exploration of various truths, digging deep not only into an alleged school incident but also into the psyche of the over-protective mother, flawlessly portrayed by Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World). A gloomy portrait that gets under your skin, and earned the Caméra d'Or, the prize for Best Debut, at Cannes.
