Cinema ZED International: Santosh

We are introducing a new special event every month in ZED: our Cinema ZED International!
Once a month, we will present one of the biggest and most promising non-English films of the moment with English subtitles! By doing so we hope to accommodate more to international audiences in Leuven, so that everyone can come and enjoy the most interesting new movies in our cosy cinema.
Next up: the Indian movie Santosh! A smart, raw, suspenseful police thriller set in rural northern India, with hints of classics like Bong Joon-Ho's Memories of Murder or the HBO-show True Detective.
Be there on Wednesday the 25th of June at 19h30 in Cinema ZED Vesalius!

Santosh

After her husband dies, Santosh traditionally inherits his job as a police officer in rural northern India. When a girl from a lower caste is murdered, charismatic detective Sharma involves her in the case. Under the wing of her new boss, Santosh goes all out to find out the truth. But the deeper she dives into the investigation, the more she gets caught in a web of corruption, misogyny and casteism.
Commentary
The first feature film from British-Indian Sandhya Suri, who has previously stood out with her empathetic documentaries, is a solid, gripping police thriller in Hindi, set in rural northern India. Suri's clever script manages to combine raw suspense with a keen eye for the less attractive sides of modern India: corrupt and violent police, ingrained sexism, caste prejudice and anti-Muslim sentiment.
