Annie Hall wordt als één van Woody Allen's beste films beschouwd. Hij schreef en regisseerde de prent zelf, en nam ook nog eens de rol van anitheld Alvy Singer voor zijn rekening. Alvy is een neurotische stand-up comedian uit New York die na een mislukt huwelijk een nieuwe kans in de liefde lijkt te krijgen wanneer hij de zangeres Annie Hall ontmoet. De film beschrijft het verloop van hun relatie vanaf hun eerste ontmoeting op een tenniscourt tot hun breuk wanneer Alvy's neurotische trekjes en seksuele driften Annie teveel worden. Alvy beseft maar al te goed dat hij zijn grote liefde door de vingers heeft laten glippen.
