Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog was Maciek lid van het Poolse verzetsleger dat vanuit Londen werd geleid door de regering in ballingschap. Het einde van de oorlog brengt niet dadelijk verlossing: binnen de 24 uur na de bevrijding barst een burgeroorlog los tussen nieuwe communistische machthebbers en restanten van het Poolse verzetsleger. Maciek krijgt de opdracht een communistische districtsleider te doden, maar hij kent de man nog van vroeger. Maciek staat, tijdens de eerste dag van de vrede, voor een moreel dilemma.

Set on VE Day, 8 May 1945, Ashes and Diamonds takes place in a provincial Polish town where the end of the war brings not relief but a profound crisis of identity. Adapted from Jerzy Andrzejewski’s novel, the film follows Maciek (Zbigniew Cybulski), a resistance fighter confronting a final assassination mission just as he glimpses the first fragile possibility of life beyond conflict. Poland’s fighters—caught between their wartime loyalties and the uneasy dawn of communist rule—struggle to understand what their sacrifices mean in a landscape where the victors are also former invaders. The film’s title, taken from lines by poet Cyprian Norwid, poses a haunting question: can any “diamond” of hope survive the ashes left by war?

De jaren ‘50 waren hoogdagen van de Poolse cinema, met cineasten die met een gedurfde filmtaal het complexe herstelproces na het collectieve trauma van oorlogsjaren vastlegden. Andrzej Wajda maakte een drieluik waarvan Ashes and Diamonds, gebaseerd op Jerzy Andrzejewski’s gelijknamige boek uit 1948, het laatste deel vormde. De film werd een mijlpaal in de filmfeschiedenis: een film die door grootheden als Martin Scorsese en Francis Ford Coppola werd gelauwerd als een van de beste films aller tijden.
