1908, a German university campus. Grete is the first female doctoral student and faces a great deal of resistance from the conservative professors. Sixty-four years later, the carefree student Hannes falls in love with a botany student. During the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, neuroscientist Tony from Hong Kong finds himself stranded in the deserted university housing, relying only on himself and the nature around him. The only constant throughout this century of history? A giant ginkgo tree, standing in the middle of the campus botanical garden. For more than a hundred years, this silent witness has observed the various people who come and go.

A little white stray dog lives in a small Thai coastal town, surviving on scraps of rice and the attention of passersby. Until a retired Japanese engineer takes the dog in and gives him a name and a temporary home for the first time. In turn, the adorable Gohan gives the retired engineer a new purpose in life. When the man has to return to Japan, a new chapter begins in Gohan’s life. At the shelter where he ends up, he meets a young refugee from Myanmar who, just like Gohan, dreams of a home.

Marjane, an intelligent and outspoken 9-year-old girl, grows up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Suddenly, she is required to wear a headscarf, and almost everything fun is forbidden. Thousands of people are imprisoned, but Marjane often outsmarts the “social guards.” She even discovers punk music, ABBA, and Iron Maiden. But when her uncle is executed without warning and Iraq bombs Tehran, the daily fear becomes palpable. Her parents worry about Marjane’s safety. Her big mouth could very well get her into trouble.
