The Librarians - screening with English subtitles on May 28th
In 2021, Matt Krause, a Texas state representative, circulated a list of 850 books that he claimed were harmful to young readers. The list turned out to focus largely on queer themes and issues of race. Shortly thereafter, the governor of Texas demanded the immediate removal of all these books from school libraries—and other states quickly followed suit. The result: a terrifying culture war, in which librarians appear to be the last line of defense.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Alderman Lalynn Wadera, poet Mustafa Kör, and Jessica Jacobs (director of VVBAD). The screening is presented in collaboration with VVBAD (the Flemish Association for Libraries, Archives, and Documentation), Avansa Oost-Brabant, and the Bib Leuven Tweebronnen. The film is subtitled in English.

Singin' in the Rain - screening with English subtitles on May 28th
In the late 1920s, Hollywood was gradually making the transition from silent films to talkies. The stars of silent films had to adapt to the new medium. Don Lockwood made the transition effortlessly because he had a beautiful voice, but his regular dance partner, the conceited blonde Lina Lamont, had an irritating, squeaky voice. Voice lessons don’t help, and yet Lamont insists on recording her own lines. Don’s best friend Cosmo comes up with the idea of secretly having another woman record and sing the lines. That other voice belongs to the charming revue singer Kathy Selden, with whom Don quickly falls in love…

Amrum 1945 - screening with English subtitles on June 2nd
April 1945. On the remote German Wadden Sea island of Amrum, severe shortages prevail in the final weeks of the war. Twelve-year-old Nanning is forced to take on the role of “head of the household” and does everything he can to provide food for his heavily pregnant mother, his younger brother and sister, and his aunt. Despite the hardships, life on the rugged, windy island sometimes feels almost like paradise. But when peace finally arrives, Nanning is confronted with his parents’ Nazi beliefs and the tensions with others on the island.

1542. Marguerite de la Rocque is married off to her uncle, the leader of an expedition to the New World. On board, she meets Thomas d’Artois, a crew member who takes advantage of her. When it comes to light that Marguerite is pregnant, she, Thomas, and her maid are left behind on a deserted island in the middle of the ocean. Cut off from the outside world, they must find a way to survive in a ruthless natural environment, while despair and madness slowly threaten to take over.

While the people of Iraq struggle to survive amid war and food shortages in the 1990s, Saddam Hussein demands that every school in the country bake a cake to celebrate his birthday. It is 9-year-old Lamia who, after being chosen by lottery, must get the job done in time for the president’s birthday party. Together with her tame rooster Hindi and classmate Saeed, she sets out determinedly on a journey from the countryside to the city, eagerly searching for the necessary—but exorbitantly expensive—ingredients.

Fifteen-year-old Ahmet lives in a remote village in North Macedonia, in a conservative Yörük Muslim community. After his mother’s death, his strict father took him out of school. He must tend the sheep and care for his younger brother Naim, who hasn’t spoken a word since their mother’s passing. Ahmet finds solace in electronic dance music and dreams of a career as a DJ. Then he falls in love with a girl who has come over from Germany because she was forced into an arranged marriage. In this deeply patriarchal community, Ahmet’s dreams seem hopeless, but with help from an unexpected source, he persists.

Budapest, 1957. In the aftermath of the crushed Hungarian Revolution, 12-year-old Andor lives among the ruins of the city with his stoic mother, Klára. She works in a small shop run by a fanatical communist, so she has to watch her words carefully. Andor has been waiting almost his entire life for his father, Hirsch, who has been missing since World War II. He idealizes his missing father as a war hero and the perfect dad. His life is therefore turned completely upside down by the arrival of Berend, a rough man from the countryside who is linked to Klára’s mysterious past during World War II and claims to be Andor’s father.

Edith, a 40-year-old journalist, is a single mother who chose to conceive through a sperm donor.
