The summer of Bergman

After focusing on Kurosawa last summer, we’ll once again delve deeply into the body of work of another master filmmaker in July and August: the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. Without a doubt one of the most influential directors the film world has ever known. Come admire six of his masterpieces as they were meant to be seen: on the big screen.

Be sure to ask for your stamp card at our reception desk! You’ll receive a stamp for every Bergman film you watch. Have you collected all six (or as many as possible) stamps by the end of the summer? Persona - screening with English subtitles on July 9th

A young nurse, Alma, is assigned to care for Elisabeth Vogler, an actress who appears healthy in every respect but is unable—or unwilling—to speak. As they spend time together, Alma constantly talks to Elisabeth, without ever receiving a response. Eventually, Alma confides her deepest secrets to a seemingly sympathetic Elisabeth, and is horrified to realize that her own personality is beginning to merge with Elisabeth’s.

Fanny & Alexander - screening with English subtitles on July 16th

Alexander Ekdahl and his younger sister Fanny grow up in the cozy Swedish town of Uppsala in the early 20th century. The Ekdahls celebrate Christmas in grand style, with a Christmas tree in every room and a visit to the theater, which the family runs. When their father suddenly dies, their mother remarries a powerful Lutheran bishop. The children move to a strictly puritanical community where their stepfather turns out to be a true tyrant. Fanny and Alexander are utterly miserable until their grandmother’s elderly Jewish friend offers them a place of refuge.

Ten years after their emotional and painful divorce, Marianne and Johan run into each other again. They reflect on their marriage and everything that has brought them to this point. The highs and lows, the love and turmoil, arguments, infidelity, and subsequent partners. After all these years, are there still lingering feelings? What exactly do they still mean to each other? The course of their encounter will reveal whether this is the last time they will see each other.

The elderly professor Isak Borg is on his way to Lund University to receive an honorary doctorate. The trip also becomes a journey of self-discovery: various encounters, as well as confrontations with dreams and memories, force him to reexamine his life, come to terms with his mistakes, and accept the inevitability of his approaching death.

A knight returning to Sweden after the Crusades seeks answers to existential questions about life, death, and God. After all the horrors he has endured, he has begun to doubt the existence of the latter. When he arrives in his homeland, ravaged by the Black Death, the Grim Reaper is waiting for him. He manages to convince Death to play a game of chess that will determine his fate.

Summer with Monika - Returns to Cinema ZED on August 14th

A girl spends a brief, ecstatic summer with her boyfriend on a remote island, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. When she finds out she’s pregnant, they are forced to get married. They move into a cramped little apartment, where the idyllic honeymoon period soon gives way to frustration, mistrust, and deep feelings of hatred.
