Karrer is een zonderlinge man die zijn dagen vult met piekeren en kijken naar trams. Hij is stapelverliefd op een zangeres van een lokale nachtclub. De liefde is echter niet wederzijds en Karrer wordt regelmatig bedreigd door de echtgenoot van de zangeres. Op een dag ziet hij een kans om via een lucratief smokkelhandeltje zijn concurrent van het toneel te doen verdwijnen.
Karrer is an eccentric man who spends his days worrying and watching trams. He is madly in love with a singer at a local nightclub. However, the love is not mutual and Karrer is regularly threatened by the singer's husband. One day, he sees an opportunity to get rid of his rival through a lucrative smuggling operation.
Commentary
Damnation marks the definitive artistic collaboration between director Béla Tarr and writer László Krasznahorkai, who together created a unique cinematic universe. Although not directly based on a specific novel by Krasznahorkai, he wrote the screenplay specifically for this film, and it bears all the hallmarks of his literary style: existential despair, metaphysical emptiness, and an almost apocalyptic vision of the human condition.

Damnation markeert de definitieve artistieke samenwerking tussen regisseur Béla Tarr (1955 - 2026) en schrijver László Krasznahorkai (die op 9 oktober 2025 nog de Nobelprijs voor Literatuur won). Samen creëerden ze een uniek cinematografisch universum.
