Béla Tarr & László Krasznahorkai - De apocalyptische trilogie
De Hongaarse cineast Béla Tarr (1955 - 2026) en schrijver László Krasznahorkai vormden een van de meest intense artistieke samenwerkingen uit de filmgeschiedenis. Krasznahorkai - Nobelprijswinnaar voor Literatuur in 2024 - leverde niet alleen het literaire fundament, maar werkte actief mee aan scenario's en het creatieve proces. Hun apocalyptische trilogie verkent de morele leegte van het individu, breidt uit naar een gemeenschap in verval, en eindigt met kosmische dreiging en collectieve waanzin.
Damnation (1988)
Damnation markeert de definitieve artistieke samenwerking tussen regisseur Béla Tarr en schrijver László Krasznahorkai, die samen een uniek cinematografisch universum creëerden. Hoewel niet direct gebaseerd op een specifieke roman van Krasznahorkai, schreef hij het scenario speciaal voor deze film, en het draagt alle kenmerken van zijn literaire stijl: existentiële wanhoop, metafysische leegte, en een bijna apocalyptische visie op de menselijke conditie.

Damnation marks the definitive artistic collaboration between director Béla Tarr and writer László Krasznahorkai, who together created a unique cinematic universe. Although not directly based on a specific novel by Krasznahorkai, he wrote the screenplay specifically for this film, and it bears all the hallmarks of his literary style: existential despair, metaphysical emptiness, and an almost apocalyptic vision of the human condition.

Satantango (1994)
Satantango is gestructureerd als een tango in twaalf 'bewegingen', opgenomen in lange takes in betoverend zwart-wit. Na de val van het communisme zijn zekerheden verdwenen; wat rest is de dorpskroeg, roddel en het angstaanjagende vermoeden dat de doden zullen herrijzen.

Satantango is structured like a tango in twelve ‘movements’, filmed in long takes in mesmerizing black and white. After the fall of communism, certainties have disappeared; what remains is the village pub, gossip, and the terrifying suspicion that the dead will rise again.

Werckmeister Harmonies (2000)
Hoe dun het vernislaagje menselijke beschaving kan zijn, demonstreert Tarr in zijn klassieker Werckmeister Harmonies. Met deze filmklassieker voltooide Béla Tarr de trilogie waartoe ook Damnation (1988) en Sátántangó (1994) behoren; de twee eerdere films kwamen eveneens tot stand in samenwerking met de Hongaarse romanschrijver en scenarist László Krasznahorkai, die op 9 oktober 2025 de Nobelprijs voor Literatuur won.

Tarr demonstrates how thin the veneer of human civilization can be in his classic film Werckmeister Harmonies. With this classic film, Béla Tarr completed the trilogy that also includes Damnation (1988) and Sátántangó (1994); the two earlier films were also made in collaboration with Hungarian novelist and screenwriter László Krasznahorkai, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature on October 9, 2025.
