Audrey Hepburns vertolking van Holly Golightly blijft tot vandaag een onmiskenbaar cultureel ijkpunt. De iconische beelden van haar met een diamanten tiara op haar hoofd of met een koffie en croissant in de hand staan in het collectieve geheugen gegrift. Toch, is Breakfast at Tiffany’s vooral een scherp portret van verlangen en eenzaamheid verpakt in een glanzende buitenkant. Regisseur Blake Edwards toont New York in een betoverende visuele stijl die oppervlakkige luxe contrasteert met existentiële leegte.

Audrey Hepburn's portrayal of Holly Golightly remains an undeniable cultural landmark to this day. The iconic images of her with a diamond tiara on her head or holding a coffee and croissant are etched in the collective memory. Yet, Breakfast at Tiffany's is primarily a sharp portrait of longing and loneliness wrapped in a glossy exterior. Director Blake Edwards depicts New York in an enchanting visual style that contrasts superficial luxury with existential emptiness.

Synopsis
Wanneer de jonge Regina plots weduwe wordt na de moord op haar echtgenoot, ontdekt ze dat haar man een groot geheim had: tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog heeft hij samen met drie vrienden een miljoen dollar verduisterd. Charade wordt vaak omschreven als “de beste Hitchcockfilm die niet door Hitchcock geregisseerd is”, al was regisseur Stanley Donen (die 10 jaar eerder een hit had met Singin’ In The Rain) het daar niet helemaal mee eens: “Hitchcock heeft het genre van de spannende komedie niet uitgevonden, noch heeft hij er een copyright op”, klonk het geïrriteerd. Wat zeker vernieuwend was, was de prettig feministische toon in de film waarbij de klassieke rollen werden omgedraaid en Audrey Hepburn ‘de macho-oneliners’ voor zich neemt om de wat oudere Gary Grant te verleiden.

Charade is often described as “the best Hitchcock film not directed by Hitchcock,” although director Stanley Donen (who had a hit 10 years earlier with Singin' In The Rain) didn't quite agree: “Hitchcock did not invent the genre of suspense comedy, nor did he copyright it,” it sounded exasperated. What was certainly innovative was the film's pleasingly feminist tone in which the classic roles were reversed, with Audrey Hepburn taking on “the macho antics” to seduce the slightly older Gary Grant.

Synopsis

Charmant, grappig en romantisch: 72 jaar na dato is Roman Holiday nog steeds een innemende en lieftallige film. Niet in het minst komt dit door haar perfect op elkaar ingespeelde hoofd-duo: tussen Gregory Peck (To Kill a Mockingbird) en Audrey Hepburn (Breakfast at Tiffany's) spatten de vonken er af. Regisseur William Wyler stond erop dat de film volledig werd opgenomen op locatie in Italië. Voor een Amerikaanse productie was dat een primeur.

Charming, funny and romantic: 72 years after the fact, Roman Holiday is still an engaging and lovely film. Not the least of which is due to its perfectly matched lead duo: between Gregory Peck (To Kill a Mockingbird) and Audrey Hepburn (Breakfast at Tiffany's), the sparks are flying. Director William Wyler insisted that the film be shot entirely on location in Italy. For an American production, that was a first.

Synopsis
De volkse Eliza Doolittle verdient haar kost als straatverkoopster. Terwijl ze op een regenachtige avond bloemen verkoopt aan de uitgang van het theater, merkt ze dat iemand haar observeert en notities maakt. Het is de arrogante professor Higgins die dialecten bestudeert en geïntrigeerd is door haar cockney-accent. Higgins en zijn vriend Colonel Pickering sluiten een weddenschap af dat hij het bloemenmeisje, alleen door haar taallessen te geven, kan omtoveren tot een dame van stand.

Deze weelderige verfilming van de gelijknamige Broadway-musical, die op zijn beurt gebaseerd was op George Bernard Shaws wereldberoemde toneelstuk Pygmalion, was een enorm succes en kreeg niet minder dan acht Oscars en drie Golden Globes. Het had niet veel gescheeld of de rol van Eliza Doolittle zou vertolkt worden door de Julie Andrews die jaren de rol op Broadway had gespeeld. Omdat Andrews toen nog geen filmervaring had - haar filmdebuut in Mary Poppins een jaar later zou haar een Oscar bezorgen - ging de rol van Eliza Doolitle uiteindelijk naar Audrey Hepburn die voor het eerst haar typecasting voor aristocratische rollen op fantastische manier wist te doorbreken.

This sumptuous film adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was based on George Bernard Shaw's world-famous play Pygmalion, was a huge success, receiving no less than eight Oscars and three Golden Globes. The role of Eliza Doolittle would have been played by Julie Andrews, who had played the role on Broadway for years. Because Andrews had no film experience at the time - her film debut in Mary Poppins a year later would earn her an Oscar - the role of Eliza Doolitle eventually went to Audrey Hepburn who, for the first time, managed to break through her typecasting for aristocratic roles in fantastic fashion.
