The Godfather
Don Vito Corleone staat aan het hoofd van een machtige maffia-familie in New York. Op de dag van zijn dochters huwelijk komt Sollozzo, die bevriend is met een andere familie, de Don voorstellen mee te gaan in drugshandel. Hij weigert: zijn familie houdt zich enkel bezig met drank en gokken. Die beslissing valt niet in goede aarde bij de andere familie - ook bij de Corleones zelf is er tegenstand - en Sollozzo probeert met een aanslag op de Don de familie op de knieën te krijgen. Dit is het signaal voor Michael, de jongste telg uit de familie, om zich, zij het weigerachtig, in de voetstappen van zijn vader te begeven.
De vertoning van 8 maart wordt ingeleid door Coppolakenner en -liefhebber Koen Monserez.
Don Vito Corleone is the head of a powerful mafia family in New York. On the day of his daughter's wedding, Sollozzo, who is friends with another family, suggests that the Don get involved in drug trafficking. He refuses: his family only deals in alcohol and gambling. This decision does not go down well with the other family—there is also opposition within the Corleones themselves—and Sollozzo tries to bring the family to its knees by attacking the Don. This is the signal for Michael, the youngest member of the family, to follow in his father's footsteps, albeit reluctantly.

Eind jaren ‘60 brak het klassieke studiosysteem van Old Hollywood af toen een nieuwe generatie filmmakers de controle opeiste. Films als Bonnie and Clyde en Easy Rider schokten met hun geweld, rebelse toon en experimentele stijl, en bewezen dat artistieke cinema commercieel succesvol kon zijn. Zo ontstond New Hollywood, dat Amerikaanse cinema voorgoed transformeerde.
The Godfather staat bekend als één van de beste films aller tijden. Bij zijn release in 1972 kreeg de film tien Oscarnominaties en wist er daar drie van te verzilveren: Beste Film, Beste Acteur (Marlon Brando) en Beste Scenario. Meer dan welke film ooit heeft The Godfather het publieke beeld van de maffia gevormd. Coppola stelt deze misdaadorganisatie niet voor als 'the bad guys' maar als een familie als elke andere, zij het met een aantal bijzondere codes. The Godfather combineerde de grandeur en het sterrensysteem van klassiek Hollywood met de morele complexiteit, het realistische geweld en de auteur-visie van New Hollywood, en werd daarmee zowel de commercieel meest succesvolle als artistiek meest gerespecteerde film die bewees dat beide werelden konden samensmelten.
